Decorating your home with mirrors

Mirrors are not give enough credit for being an integral part of home decor. These highly reflective surfaces, when placed at the right angles can reflect light in all directions thus giving your living space an illusion of ventilation. This will also help reduce your light bills. Large mirrors are great substitutes for windows, especially if you live in a cramped area where mirrors are not permissible. However, installing mirrors is an art in itself. Here are a few tips to make the best out of your mirror installations.

Consider your interior decorations
Although mirrors are neutral and reflect the wall space opposite to them, you have to give due consideration to the mirror frame. It is customary to install mirrors at the very last stage of interior decoration for this very reason. Make sure that the frame you choose sits well with the existing interior design and adds to the overall look. When used right, mirrors themselves can become art works in your living space.

The placement
What you choose is only half the battle, where you place the mirror ultimately decides the defining feature of the installation. Make sure to have it placed in a manner that it faces a focal point. In a bedroom, make sure it overlooks the bed, in the dining area, it should overlook the dining table, etc. Another thing one needs to take care of is that the mirror does not reflect the glare from the lighting fixtures.

Ideally mirrors are placed in locations where it can reflect natural light from windows. Placing it at window height will help achieve this effect to its fullest.
